Arso by Profumum

*****
Year: 2010

Notes: cedar leaf, frankincense, leather, pine resin
In essence, Arso (yes, it's definitely an ill-chosen name for a scent that's sold internationally) is a continuation of Profumum's soft, sweet and suave masculine woody offerings. Previous releases that fit into the same mould include Thundra, Oxiana and Aquae Noblis. Thus, if none of these were considered bottle-worthy, there's a high possibility that Arso will be no different.

Upon first smelling it, there's something intrinsically sweet and creamy about the composition. But where's the smoke? What about the resins? Contrary to the official ad copy, the smell of burning wood and leaves aren't as obvious as originally anticipated, with it venturing more into syrupy woods territory (similar to Nasomatto's Duro and some of Montale's recent non-floral oud creations).

With progression at a snail's pace, its smoky and leathery attributes coyly emerge but are repeatedly stifled by its inherent sweetness. Elements of frankincense and pine are discernible but only just, as it continues down a largely linear path, yielding longevity of at least six hours.

Stylistically coming across as a mere variation of Oxiana, it's no patch on the smokiness of Fumidus.
