Notes: mandarin, plum, absinthe, cinnamon, Damascus rose, iris, vanilla, patchouli, leather, musk
Created in honour of the famous burlesque theatre, Moulin Rouge, located in Paris' 18th arrondissement, 1889 is described as a powdery floral.
It's a sumptuous interplay of iris, rose, vanilla and musk, with spicy plum facets. Emitting a dusty pink lipstick note, the iris is more syrupy than rooty – with the composition strongly recalling Hilde Soliani Profumi's Vecchi Rossetti (also inspired by the theatre). However, 1889 isn't as provocative and exudes an unpleasantly metallic odour, which hinders one's enjoyment of it (probably due to the synthetic leather and musk base).
Even though 1889 outperforms Vecchi Rossetti, particularly in terms of longevity, one feels that the latter is the superior of the two. Furthermore, 1889 also appears to be a stripped-down version of Tubéreuse 2 Virginale, but with some leather added and the iris ramped up several notches.
Regardless of these observations, 1889 is still a reasonable offering.
