Orient Extréme by Montale

*****
Year: 2005

Notes: citrus, spices from Sri Lanka, Eastern roses, honey, patchouli, benzoin, oakmoss, Mysore sandalwood, musk
Once again, Montale has released a fragrance with a very misleading name...

The main problem with Orient Extréme is that it's not even remotely an oriental but more of a chypré. And no, it doesn't even come close to smelling like Sweet Oriental Dream (as the name would suggest). It's very much in the same vein as Chypré Vanille but smells more similar to the resinous, musty and almost aldehydic nature of Boisé Vanillé.

Not only is it an uninteresting composition but it also smells unfinished – like a conventional chypré base that's devoid of any compelling additional notes. In addition, both the rose and sandalwood are far too subdued, with the benzoin, patchouli and oakmoss largely dominating against a sweet musk base.

With below average longevity and sillage, a better name for it would have been Chypré Musk.
