Fiore d'Ambra by Profumum

*****
Year: 2004

Notes: spices, opium poppy, amber
Fiore d'Ambra isn't a hardcore amber scent, but nor is it as pungent or challenging as other niche ambers, like Serge Lutens' Ambre Sultan and even Profumum's very own Ambra Aurea. Instead, Fiore d'Ambra is both a soft and ethereal amber, beautifully interwoven with a delicious serving of caramelised vanilla and subtle spices.

Almost straight away, one is reminded of the syrupy spiciness of Musc Ravageur by Frédéric Malle (especially with regards to its fusion of clove, cinnamon and vanilla) leading one to assume that the very same spices may also be present in Fiore d'Ambra. But it's the resinous, tenacious and somewhat powdery amber that provides a sturdy backbone to the proceedings, as opposed to the ineffectual musk base that severely marred Frédéric Malle's creation.

With excellent longevity, it hardly projects much during its lifespan and serves to be its main downfall. Granted, it's both a high-quality and well-blended composition but, for such an alluring oriental, one expected a lot more intensity with regards to its level of diffusion.

Although it's an expensive fragrance, if one had to choose between it and Musc Ravageur, Fiore d'Ambra would undoubtedly be the preferred choice.
