Year: 1998
Notes: frankincense, myrrh, ambergris
Personally, Ambra Aurea is one of the few Profumum scents that are truly bottle-worthy. Now, that's not to say most of them aren't particularly good (actually, quite the opposite) but, for the high price tag, one would expect each release to be as outstandingly brilliant as this opulent creation.
It's an extremely dark, rich and warm amber offering. Although unlisted, one can also detect both a pronounced and leathery labdanum accord, coupled with some frankincense and myrrh. Possessing a powdery demeanour, there's also a noticeably mild skanky aroma that re-surfaces intermittently (probably due to the generous use of natural ambergris).
It's rather tenacious and produces both a soft and sensual aura of sillage, but it doesn't quite have the amazing staying power of Montale's Blue Amber (which is a very minor complaint). With that said, Ambra Aurea is still a high-quality creation, which smells more luxurious than Serge Lutens' thin and fleeting Ambre Sultan.
Simply put, if Ambre Sultan and Ambra Aurea were the only two amber fragrances in existence, Ambra Aurea would most definitely be first choice without a moment's hesitation.
