Year: 2011
Notes: mandarin, lavender, black pepper, blond Virginian tobacco, leather, patchouli from five Indian regions
Cuir Mandarine is the daytime version of Cuir Tabac. However, while it's more boisterous than its quieter sibling, it still falls prey to the same issue – an unsatisfying leathery presence.
Anyone expecting something dark and uncompromising like Montale's Oud Cuir d'Arabie (without the oud note, of course) will be in for a grave disappointment, as it's nothing more than a high-quality patchouli fragrance with aromatic flourishes.
Opening with some mandarin, the leather is evident but lacking, as it intermingles with the composition's sweet patchouli and tobacco core. But, in contrast to Cuir Tabac, Cuir Mandarine is more masculine and a tad darker, with a less intense tobacco aroma. Longevity is great and its aura migrates closer to the skin over time.
Overall, it's a real pity as there's some real potential for greatness inherent in this creation. Although it could be considered a missed opportunity, it still might appeal to patchouli enthusiasts looking for something new.
