Year: 2010
Notes: Calabrian bergamot, magnolia, orris, myrrh, labdanum, amber, Madagascan vanilla, sandalwood, musks
Comment: Ambre Noir is part of Les Contextuels Collection
It would be very easy to accuse the majority of Brecourt's oeuvre on focusing too intensely on the syrupy sweet notes, especially at the expense of other featured components (and rightfully so). But while Ambre Noir doesn't deviate too much from this template, its initial sweetness is more resinous courtesy of the myrrh, magnolia and evanescent orris.
Unfortunately, there's nothing particularly dark or nefarious about it at all, despite the claims that a high dosage of labdanum has been used. For once past the citrus-infused resinous opening, the composition evolves into a faint musky mire of amber and labdanum that barely jumps off the skin. Also, the sandalwood remains discreet throughout, as the vanilla fuses with both the amber and labdanum to emit a tonka bean aroma.
Based on what the name implies, it's disappointingly transparent and sheer, plus its average staying power and low projection doesn't compel one to consider wearing it again.
