Sandal Sliver by Montale

*****
Year: unknown

Notes: bergamot, Sicilian citrus, neroli, orange blossom, jasmine, vanilla, Mysore sandalwood
Sandal Sliver isn't a classic Montale release but, then again, nor is it a terrible one – it's simply a confused and disappointing underachiever.

Most of the time, it meanders around with uncertainty but a soft and creamy sandalwood accord occasionally shines through. Other than that, it's an incoherent mess with all kinds of random citrus, floral, woody and green notes making cameo appearances for no significant reason. Its longevity is acceptable but it pretty much stays close to the skin for most of its duration.

On closer inspection, Sandal Sliver could be perceived as the sandalwood equivalent of Serge Lutens' muddled floral rendition of cedar, Cèdre – they both had the potential but the execution severely let them down (in other words, the main accord is literally smothered by the supporting notes).

The creamy sandalwood is rather exquisite but, alas, it's the only thing that's truly noteworthy.
