Year: 1997
Notes: grapefruit, lemon, orange, mandarin, cypress, woods
Acqua di Sicilia is an intense, tart and modern citrus Eau de Cologne that focuses more on the notes of orange and mandarin. It's also denser than either Santa Maria Novella / Colonia Classica or Colonia Russa, with a mild tangy demeanour.
Immediately after application, the bright citrus opening is concerningly overwhelming – dangerously verging into territory redolent of Annick Goutal's Eau d'Hadrien or Profumum's Acqua Viva. But it's not long before it settles down and the cypress provides some balance to the composition. With a light woody base, its lasting power is far superior to its two citrus-dominant siblings – lingering on the skin at least three times longer.
While its demeanour is more unorthodox than traditional, it's by no means less impressive. With this house's typical use of high-quality materials, Acqua di Sicilia remains the personal favourite out of the three citrus Eau de Colognes by Santa Maria Novella.
