White Aoud by Montale

*****
Year: 2006

Notes: cardamom, saffron, Damascus rose, jasmine, Arabian oud, vetiver, patchouli, labdanum, amber, vanilla, Mysore sandalwood, precious woods
There was once a time when one considered White Aoud to be nothing more than a disappointing oud creation, specifically catered for the Western palette. However, since then, one has made a surprising u-turn.

White Aoud is simply a softer version of Black Aoud but with the addition of an oriental base. It also smells like a blueprint for the more cluttered Red Aoud, which was released the following year. Its floral and spicy opening highlights a beautiful coupling of cardamom and saffron, before it soon reveals both a creamy and sensual base of labdanum, amber, vanilla and woods.

While the mellow drydown doesn't project as much as the opening, it sadly lacks the lasting power of the more potent Montale oud offerings but is still both satisfying and compelling to wear. In saying that, it's a deliciously lush and soft oud interpretation, which certainly deserves the praise that one was once very reluctant to award it upon its release.
