Golden Aoud by Montale

*****
Year: 2007

Notes: Jamaican capsicum pepper, saffron, Bulgarian rose, Bourbon geranium, oud, leather, patchouli, teak, Moroccan cedar
Golden Aoud is significantly lighter and less demanding than other Montale oud offerings. As for the amount of oud incorporated, it's somewhat similar (stylistically) to the more inoffensive oud releases, such as Royal Aoud and Sliver Aoud. Personally, one would have much preferred a greater presence of oud.

On this occasion, the main point of focus lies on both the Bourbon geranium and saffron, with the rose and oud merely playing supporting roles. As for the rest of the notes, they are either present in minuscule proportions or are hardly detectable. Also, there's a smoky or metallic tinge towards the drydown (possibly due to the leather accord) that could either be irritating or addictive for some.

To those who prefer the smoother and more discreet Montale ouds, this one may appeal. However, one is very unsure if the addition of this underwhelming creation is in any way beneficial to the oud line – it's now reaching the point where differentiating between them is becoming increasingly difficult.
