Original Aouds by Montale

Notes: Cambodian oud
Based on previous incarnations, Aoud Pur Oriental and Bois de Aoud, Original Aouds is (allegedly) a far lighter version of its predecessors.

Although it claims to only comprise of Cambodian oud, one is simply not convinced. Cambodian oud is usually dense, fruity (in the sweet and jammy sense) and complex by nature, but Original Aouds doesn't even remotely share such distinctive characteristics.

Instead, it commences with a rather brief and medicinal band-aid type blast, which swiftly gives way to a sharp nutty accord that follows a linear path. Now, that's most definitely not how Cambodian oud should smell. Also, with low sillage and average longevity, its performance could have been a little better.

So, is it a genuine representation of unadulterated oud? No, it most certainly is not. But, in all fairness, it would make an excellent layering scent. If one keeps this in mind, it could be appreciated for what it actually is rather than for what it fails at pretending to be.
