Notes: Calabrian bergamot, lemon, orange, nutmeg, cardamom, Egyptian jasmine, Turkish rose, vanilla, ambergris
Monforte 2 starts off with some citrus accords, which are so demure and low-key that anyone could be forgiven for perceiving them as resolutely dull and flat. The subtle spices gradually emerge on a soft and creamy bed of jasmine, interweaving with the lethargic citruses. As the rose enters the fray, the sweetness of the composition intensifies but the florals continue to remain subservient.
The vanilla eventually surfaces and provides a firm backbone to the creamy floral nuances, originally initiated by the now retiring jasmine. Then suddenly, courtesy of the ambergris, a very interesting thing happens: the fading citruses sharpen in clarity and the vanilla unexpectedly yields to the rose. During the first half of this surprising transition, a tangy custard-like aroma meets the nose – now only a spicy tea rose drydown remains, with faint vanillic sighs.
With good longevity and moderate sillage, it's olfactory nature is redolent of one of the floral-oriental offerings by Les Parfums de Rosine but with more complexity and much better tenacity. That alone should make Monforte 2 worth investigating, in one's humble opinion.
