Ruth Mastenbroek by Ruth Mastenbroek

Year: 2010

Notes: bergamot, mandarin, pineapple, blackcurrant, pink pepper, rose, lily, jasmine, patchouli, oakmoss, sandalwood, musk
After years spent creating and developing fragrances for numerous companies, Ruth Mastenbroek has followed the current trend by going solo and launching her own line of scents. To one's relief, this is comprised of only one solitary creation (as opposed to six, ten or even more all at once).

Ruth Mastenbroek is classified as a chypré but, to one's nose, it's more of a modern rendition. With a buoyant, tart and fruity opening, the pineapple is well-behaved and the pepper isn't overwhelming. Even though it's been designated as feminine, the floral accords of rose, lily, jasmine are rather discreet, prompting one to conclude that it's more unisex in its general demeanour. With the rich and succulent fruity accords continuing to remain obstinate, a soft and earthy drydown of moss, woods and musk ensues regardless.

Possessing very gentle sillage, one was expecting more tenacity. Furthermore, as much as Ruth Mastenbroek [the fragrance] is rather delightful, one can't help but ascertain an indisputable stylistic resemblance with some of the offerings from the stable of Ormonde Jayne.

While it remains a respectable release, one hopes that Ruth Mastenbroek will be a little more adventurous next time round.
