Year: 2001
Notes: citrus, lavender, orange blossom, almond, amber, sandalwood
With an opening of citrus, orange blossom and lavender, which retreats into a powdery haze of creamy vanilla and almond, Antico Caruso possesses a strong sense of déjà vu. It's only after further musing that it becomes apparent the inspiration for this Profumum creation stems from Jean-Paul Gaultier's Le Mâle.
While niche houses copying designer scents is considered as taboo to some, Antico Caruso is better blended and uses higher quality ingredients. Naturally, due to the presence of less synthetics (if any), Antico Caruso is more discreet and not as tenacious. However, in saying that, it exudes an air of sophistication when compared to the ubiquitous and brash Le Mâle.
During its suave sandalwood and amber drydown, comparisons to Le Mâle gradually subside only to generate further comparisons to yet another designer fragrance, Yves Saint Laurent's Body Kouros (once again, inspired by Le Mâle), with remnants of creamy almond gently weaving in out of the base notes.
Antico Caruso isn't a terribly complex scent nor, based on the above, is it completely original. However, those who are seeking a more natural and elegant version of Le Mâle should look no further.
