Sandflowers by Montale

*****
Year: unknown

Notes: sea water, juniper berry, oakmoss, sandalwood
Sandflowers is yet another oceanic release by Montale but, on this occasion, it aims at recreating the aroma of idyllic days on a seaweed strewn beach. As with the majority of aquatics and marines, there's the compulsory inclusion of calone (an aroma chemical, largely responsible for its fresh salty air accord) but, paired with juniper berry, it offers something more unique that allows such an olfactory evocation to succeed.

The opening is synthetically clean and remains that way with little development, while both the sandalwood and oakmoss are present but very subtle. There's also an oily note lurking in the background (possibly to mimic the smell of suntan lotion?) that's as confounding as it is sometimes difficult to enjoy.

Overall, it's reasonably pleasant but also nothing spectacular. With moderate sillage and average longevity, it's too indistinct for a niche fragrance. However, not being a great lover of aquatic or marine scents, please take all of the above with a pinch of salt (pun intended).
