Ceci N'est Pas un Flacon Bleu / This Is Not a Blue Bottle by Histoires de Parfums

*****
Year: 2015

Notes: orange, aldehydes, geranium, honey, patchouli, amber, musk
Housed in a blue opaque bottle, the bottle is a visual tribute to International Klein Blue (IKB) – a deep blue hue first mixed by French artist Yves Klein in collaboration with Edouard Adam, a Parisian art paint supplier. As for the name, it's taken from the text featured in René Magritte's surrealist painting, La Trahison des Images (albeit adjusted accordingly). Together, these two sources of inspiration form a pompous olfactory concept, based on a creation that's extremely prosaic and pedestrian.

So, what's wrong about it? Well, in a nutshell, the fragrance is simply a more upscale version of those designer sport woody-aromatics, along the lines of Chanel's Allure and Bleu de Chanel. With a crisp citrus introduction, it exudes a similar metallic sheen as the honey smooths out any rough edges. Thankfully, any aquatic accents (if any) are minuscule.

While it's well-executed and the juice complements the ultramarine theme, one is left bewildered as to how the price can justify such a formulaic composition. However, in its defence, it does possess a warm aura, courtesy of the geranium, honey and patchouli core. And as always with such fresh woody-aromatics, the drydown is a woody-amber musk finale.

Providing minimal sillage, but still being perceptible beyond the six hour mark, Ceci N'est Pas un Flacon Bleu / This Is Not a Blue Bottle is best reserved for completists and fragrance bottle collectors only.
